Good weather aplenty!

Judging from the lack of lengthy posts around here, you should have suspected that already! πŸ˜‰ I’ve been too busy enjoying myself in the sun and warmth, and also doing some sort of useful work on the side :).

Last week was a bit hectic, a combination of both birthday party, some other group celebrations, house hunting and a paper in the process of being written. I mean, I can’t really complain – I am completely master of my time now, no-one depends on me and I don’t depend on anybody, so I can afford arriving home at 21h if I want/need to.

Meanwhile, the good weather has been more or less constant, which means I was able to row on both Saturday and Sunday – hooray! On Sunday it was absolutely fantastic – no wind at all, and I had the river mostly for myself, flat water aplenty! It is true that I have a few bends to worry about, and the river is narrower than some B-class roads around here, but I’m in the water with a more-or-less OK single! I am grateful, and I became even more grateful after reading this post about people rowing in the devastation caused by hurricane Katrina – my tribulations are nothing compared to theirs!

Inside
After more than one year living here in Canterbury, I finally entered the Cathedral! Shame on me…
The
Whitstable sea front, as seen from the big groyne in the low tide. Quite a fantastic day, people were even bathing in the sea… in early May!

Yesterday I also had a good friend visiting me. We had a great time, I showed him some of the views around here, sadly there were no oysters because we got there too late! (and it was Sunday…)

They came!

The 75 photo prints I ordered from Lidl have arrived! Best of all, they were free!! (well, I had to pay postage and packing, but it was only Β£1.33)

Now I can start adding some colour to my surroundings! πŸ™‚

New wheels!

I finally took the plunge (after a few months saving…) and got myself a car (call it an “advance” birthday present). I had planned to do so more towards the end of the month, but this little blue gem came along, and in my opinion it wouldn’t last long until it was sold.

Very, very basic – no electric windows, no central locking, no power steering, and a ridiculously small 3-cylinder, 973cc engine. But it does only have 23600 miles on the clock (about 45000 km for those on the other side of the Channel), not bad for a soon-to-be 14-year-old car! And it runs like a dream…
So, now, off to the beach, off to the river, off to somewhere remote – the possibilities are endless! (sadly, the money to pay for the petrol isn’t… but this is a very frugal machine, so it is not that bad!)

And now, I must arrange some time to write a proper blog post. But the endless pile of lab reports to mark is also begging for attention… bah! πŸ˜›

… I was presented with this familiar sight. Apparently Mr Winter does not want to go away just yet…

But instead of just moaning about the fact that the Ergathon got cancelled for today (and the outings for tomorrow, as well!) I decided to take out my bicycle and do some proper photographing of my wintry surroundings.

Cycled up the hill and ventured beyond the campus (this was actually the first time I took the Raleigh on the Crab & Winkle way!), armed with my digital SLR and a good coat. The snow wasn’t that bad… apart from some bits which were quite muddy (and the “muddiness” was hidden by the layer of snow on top) I had no issues today, either cycling on- and off-road.

Funnily enough, I discovered that I had a photo from last year (around this very same time) in one of the spots I stopped at today. Can you tell which one is 2012 and which one is 2013? πŸ™‚

See more images in my Flickr photostream (they are all geotagged, in case you’re around here and want to check it out – this cycle route and its surrounding woods are definitely worth a visit!).
