More tests with the action camera…
Manuel Marques December 13, 2014 No Comments Uncategorized
Last weekend, after having done a little service to my bike (definitely it was needing it! Muck and dirt all over the chain, and the frame was coated with hard mud everywhere!…) I went on a little trip to Chartham, which is a village close to Canterbury on the banks of the Great Stour.
There’s a nice cycle path there, and given that it was a glorious sunny day (albeit a chilly one) I decided to take the action camera for a spin – mounted it on the handlebar and off I went!
(I sped up the video to spare you a long viewing time. Enjoy!)
Thermal amplitudes? :)

Yesterday it was ‘3-4 degrees C’ day – cycling to work in the morning, 3 degrees; going for a quick run in the woods at lunchtime, 3 degrees; and in the evening while preparing to go home, again 3 degrees. Amazingly, it kept that temperature through the night — there was no frost over the car this morning!
(but that is going to change very soon.. I heard that tomorrow is going to be very chilly! š )
Silvercrest Action Camera (Lidl)

So yes, last week after a short love affair that started with a Lidl catalogue I went and got myself an action camera from Silvercrest, aggressively priced at £79.99, but with similar features to those of a far more expensive GoPro.
It came with a whole array of accessories, including two sets of cases (one water-proof, one splash-proof which features some holes to enable the camera to record audio through its built-in microphone), loads of different mounts and straps including a bike handlebar mount (which should also be compatible with a rowing shell’s outrigger).
The camera itself can record Full HD video @ 30 fps, or 720p @ 60 fps. It has a few nifty features which I have yet to explore, including time lapse and wi-fi remote control & viewing (I had to install an app from Google Play for that; there’s also a version available for iOS).

Can’t comment on the battery life as I haven’t done a full cycle yet – got it with about 1/4-1/2 of the charge and took it for a 40′ run on Sunday, didn’t manage to deplete it completely! I will write a follow-up post once I get to use a bit more (and perhaps under some nicer weather).
As for the video footage, here it is in its 720p-glory (after a bit of encoding). For some weird reason when I post-processed the video (with kdenlive) it rendered it with a lot more time (1h36m!), filling the end of the clip with black frames. I still need to optimise that, work in progress! š
The track itself, to be absolutely honest with you I think it was the first time I actually ran it (!) – I’ve obviously done parts of it, but this particular loop was a novel configuration, mostly chosen to avoid muddy bits (I am too lazy to scrub my trainers after a run and plus I was running with my newest set, which are still looking rather nice! š š ).
The route:Starting from Tyler Hill, I headed to Blean via Tyler Hill Road (those two bends next to Hothe Court Farm are a bit dangerous, I wouldn’t dream of doing that bit wearing headphones as it is basically a blind bend on a road with no pedestrian paths!), then took the A290 (Blean Hill) towards Canterbury, passing through Rough Common and the junction with Giles Lane (towards the university campus).
Afterwards, I followed the National Cycle Route 1 down the hill, through Neals Place Road and ending up in that housing estate next to London Road. Ran Westgate Court Avenue all the way till its junction with Whitstable Road, and descended a bit more into town, turning left just a bit before the St Dunstans roundabout.
Followed Beaconsfield Road until the junction with St Michaels Road (a popular route for people cycling into the UKC campus given that it links directly with the Eliot foot/cycle path) , from there I followed the foot path up to campus. Crossed the campus until its eastern end (Darwin), and took the B2205 back into Tyler Hill.
But since I was still about 400m away from my 10k goal I decided to do a few silly loops around the village until the Garmin finally acknowledged it (the locals probably think I’m crazy, but then again there weren’t that many people outside with that fantastic weather! š )
Right, before this turns into a running-only post, just to sum up the camera: so far I liked it, the OLED display is very good, should be very readable under direct sunlight (can’t verify that for a while, though…), the recordings are made in MP4 in a fairly Linux-friendly codec (I have the bad and ugly gstreamer plugins, though…), not requiring any special software (some basic video editing software is included in the package, but it being Windows- and Mac-only meant that I couldn’t really do anything with it …). I still have a significant amount of testing to do, but for now I’m quite happy. I do intend to get the optional RF remote that can be ordered separately, which will allow me to start recording remotely without having to use my phone (useful if I’m on the boat, especially considering that the remote comes in the shape of a wrist-watch…). Keep tuned for more videos, hopefully I should make a few more soon!

Schwalbe Marathons!
Manuel Marques November 8, 2014 No Comments Uncategorized bike, maintenance, Marathons, photo, Schwalbe, tyres
Indeed I “pimped” up my ride today with a pair of Schwalbe Marathons from Chain Reaction. I got two 700 x 28c, as I do tend to overload the bike quite a lot and a 25c would just be silly (and I came to that conclusion myself, after wrongly ordering one from eBay… I could feel every single bump hitting the rim!!).
Anyway, it wasn’t too hard to fit (especially when I had H. around to help, him being one of my housemates and a terrific bike mechanic! š ), the hardest bit was to remove the old 25c tyre I had on my rear wheel!
I went for a little test drive and it definitely feels a lot nicer, especially since now I can pump it to the required level (around 5-6 bar) with confidence that the tube will not blow up (I got some nice new inner tubes as well). But the best thing is really the puncture protection – hopefully these tyres will withstand at least a year of harsh treatment! (I ride in a mix of road and partially paved tracks)
Well, if you don’t see any further posts ranting about me having had a puncture, it is a sign that the tyres are actually quite good š
And now, on to actually do some work!

Here we go again…
Manuel Marques November 4, 2014 No Comments Uncategorized personal, rant, status, weather, work
So yeah, after that amazing week in Arizona I’m back in cold, damp England. Well, I can’t really complain – much to my amazement it was quite warm on my arrival, so warm that I was actually roasting inside my car while stuck on yet another M25 traffic jam while returning from the airport!
But the weather here is like a Heaviside step function – Friday evening was still amazing (17 degrees C at 8 PM!!), and by end of Saturday the cold, the wind, and the rain muscled themselves in. As I’m writing this I have outside a balmy 6 degrees C and 95% RH. Anyway, this is not the Met Office so I should probably stop talking about the weather! š
Going back to my trip, I have yet to organise my 1000+ photos I (with some help from the front seat passenger) took whilst on the trip to the Grand Canyon and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. It is going to take a while but it is going to be worthy, there are some spectacular and exquisite images in there.
Right now I’ve been busying myself with teaching, preparing student chapter activities, researching and thinking about more potential research. Obviously still trying to cram a few runs and sculls in the meantime, especially with S Silvestre so close by (and I have to say that I’m being rubbish at preparing myself for it – I miss the training sessions I was having with my rowing mates back in Porto, here I feel I don’t push the same!!).
Finally got some time to sort out the website and make it look the way I wanted – I feel it is better this way, first time visitors will not go straight into my blog content, which might be a good idea, especially if people from a more “serious kind” end up in these pages!
OK, I think it is time for bed now – tomorrow is going to be a big day, especially since we’ll be hosting a joint colloquium with a few other research groups from different schools within the university. It has all the potential to be quite interesting and to foster potential collaborations between people with a broad range of interests and skills, which is something we definitely lack and that I did see in abundant quantities in the States (more on that in a later post…).
Location update: Tucson, AZ!

And here I am in Tucson! After sleeping the jet lag through (one night’s sleep and I was fine! š ), we had a very busy day at the OSA Student Leadership Conference, with plenty of inspiring talks and good speakers. Plus, it was quite refreshing to see what kind of activities other student chapters across the world are doing, and eventually – ahem – take some of those ideas back to our own Student Chapter!
Pretty productive day, and met a lot of interesting people so far. And now… let the actual conference begin! š (and I’m now going to bed, as I still want to cram an early morning run before things start getting busy…)
Some more photos of the glorious sunshine (which turned into rain in the evening, British-weather-style) are available on my Flickr album.
Cheap home insurance, but…
Manuel Marques October 17, 2014 No Comments Uncategorized bloop, funny, insurance
I got this through the post today – they seem to be barking at the wrong tree as we are all students with barely any valuables, but anyway, I kept reading… Ā£100 per year (with the cashback) doesn’t seem that bad – but they have made some assumptions. OK, let me see what they were…
Right, so they got the # of bedrooms wrong, but the house has been recently refurbished so I’ll concede them that. I kept reading, though… hold on, applicant’s age 67 years old??! And how on Earth was I capable of having 5 years of no claims bonus if I’m only in this country for less than 3 years? š
The funny bit is that it seems the house has aged significantly since the last letter we’ve received (I think it wasn’t home insurance, it was about refurbs & home insulation) – we went from 1968 to 1955 in just a few weeks! š
Still, I don’t know how Halifax got hold of my mailing address. But that’s fine – they make me laugh from time to time, no grudges held!
